The Prophet sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam said: “Indeed, there is a piece of flesh in the body; if it is sound, then all the body is sound. However, if it is diseased, then all the body is diseased. Truly that is the heart.”

[Al-Bukhaaree 1/126, Muslim 1599 from Nu`maan ibn Basheer radhiallahu `anhumaa]

The word "Islam" comes from an Arabic word meaning "to submit to the will of God". This word is derived from the same root as the Arabic word "salam", which means "peace". Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind, one must submit to the will of God and live according to His Divinely revealed Law. The most important truth that God revealed to mankind is that there is none other worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God, thus all human beings should submit to Him.
"Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God, regardless of race, nationality or ethnic background. Being a Muslim means living in accordance with His message and willfully being obedient to the will of God. Someone who submits completely to God and worships Him alone is a Muslim.
